Ma. Mylene Martinez-Villegas

Ma. Mylene Martinez-Villegas is a licensed geologist (1990) and professional teacher (2005) who has worked with PHIVOLCS for 30 years.


She received her undergraduate degree in Geology from the University of the Philippines (1990), her MS Geology from Arizona State University (1997), M Development Communication (2012) and Doctor of Communication (2017) from the University of the Philippines-Open University.


She joined DOST-PHIVOLCS in 1991. Her first 10 years was spent on volcano studies for hazards assessment with the Geology, Geophysics Research and Development Division. She moved on to head the Geologic Disaster Awareness and Preparedness Division of PHIVOLCS to focus on leading programs on volcano, earthquake and tsunami disaster education and capacity building in partnership with various groups.


Her field experience and research interests in the last 10 years include volcano hazards and risk communication, evacuation behaviors, volcano oral histories, narratives analysis and community-based DRRM.
